General Infos of Seiser Alm and the Dolomites
The Dolomites exist to big parts of fossilized coral reefs. Typically for the Dolomites is the sudden change between softly corrugated alps and the precipitous reefs sitting on it from limestone. The reefs rise almost till a height of about 3,000 to 3,200 m and often are flattened on top. The name of the Dolomites as well as the Dolomitstone derives from the French geologist Deodat de Dolomieu (* in 1750; + in 1801).
The Seiser alp is the biggest high-level alp of Europe. It has a size of 52 km ² and is on a height of 1,800 to 2,200 m. The western part forms since 1975 together with the Schlern and the Rosengarten the Nature Parc Schlern-Rosengarten. Of the Schlern - one of the most impressive mountain scenery of the Dolomites - separates the Seiseralm to the west. To southeast the striking mountain massif of the Langkofelgruppe builds the frontier. To the north the Seiser alp is limited by the Grödnertal (Val di Gardena) on whose north side the Geisler rises.
